Introduction :

555 Timer IC chip is a multipurpose chip . 555 Timer IC chip is used for various timer , oscillator application and pulse generation . This 555 Timer IC  was introduced by Signetics in the year 1971  .

This IC also provides :

  • Time delay
  • As an oscillator
  • Flip-Flop element

Due to its ease to use , more stability and low price  it is being produced by many companies widespread .

This standard 555 IC package includes :

  1. 25 Transistor
  2. 2 Diodes
  3. 15 Resistors

on a single silicon chip installed in 8 pin mini dual in line package ( DIP-8 ) .

The Manufacturer of this IC are CEMI , ECG Philips , Exar , Fairchild Semiconductor , Goldstar , Harris , IK Semicon , Intersil  , Maxim Motorola , National semiconductor , RCA , STMicroelectronics , Texas Instruments , Zetex and more …

Function :

This is mostly used for generating accurate time pulse . As we have discussed that it has 8 pins , it also has two modes of operations :

  • Monostable

In Monostable mode delay of pulse can be controlled by an external capacitor and a resistor .

In Astable duty cycle and frequency can be controlled by two external resistors and a capacitor.

In Bistable it can act as a flip flop if DIS pin is not connected and no capacitor is used .

When the Input fall below 1/2 i.e the half of CTRL voltage the OUT pin goes high and the timing interval starts which is 2/3 of V cc , when the CTRL is open .
